Horse Trick Training
To be sure, there's a lot more to reining quarter horses than just horse trick training, but learning a trick can be one of the most fun aspects of reining for horse and rider alike! The hallmark trick for a reining horse is called a sliding stop. To perform this trick, the horse is taken from a gallop to an immediate and complete halt, planting its hind feet and allowing for them to slide several feet as the front legs continue to walk forward. This feat requires a great deal of strength and control and is a sure-fire sign of extensive horse trick training.
Reining Quarter Horses Successfully
If there is anything certain about the training involved with reining quarter horses it's that there are no hard and fast rules for getting it right. Each rider -and each quarter horse for that matter- has a training style and rhythm that is all their own. However, there are a few factors that tend to remain constant among successful riders and quarter horses alike.
First, to find success at reining quarter horses, a rider should look for a horse that displays agility, speed and responsiveness to commands. Powerful hindquarters are a must as well as excellent coordination and leg conformation. However, a horse that doesn't immediately measure up to these standards shouldn't necessarily be counted out as a bad fit for reining purposes. A skilled rider and good horse training methods go a long way in reining quarter horses successfully.
