The Art of Reining Horses

Anyone who has ever witnessed a reining competition knows that reining horses is a true art form. To be sure, the absolute submission of such a magnificent and powerful animal through nothing more than gentle guidance could be called nothing else.

Indeed, the rich history of reining horses stretches all the way back to the Spanish settlers of Mexico and the legendary cowboys of the old American West who developed the techniques out of a necessity for quick and nimble horses that obeyed unfailingly to assist them in the control of great herds of cattle on the open range. Control primarily through the legs and weight and riding with one hand free became the trademark characteristics around which the art of reining horses has evolved into the international sport it has become today.
